Parkersburg Colored School was established in 1862 by seven courageous African American men who risked their lives freedom to provide their children and community with the opportunity for a better life through formal education. It later adopted the name Sumner High School, honoring the renowned abolitionist and Massachusetts Senator.
For 93 years the school embodied a can-do spirit, showcasing the foresight and commitment to educating young minds despite numerous challenges. The dedication of its faculty, teachers, and students has taught us that education remains a vital catalyst for creating productive life choices, sustainable livelihoods, and generational wealth in knowledge. Although the school no longer exists, we continue to recognize its significance in American history. May we always remember…
